Any make, year by year
- Data DfT and DVLA, VEH0160 and VEH0120; DVSA MOT
- Covers Cars, Great Britain and United Kingdom
- Updated the latest quarter
Every new car registered in Great Britain since 2001, one year at a time, down a road that widens in the good years and narrows in the lean ones.
The road so far
The road’s width is the number of new cars that year. A pink marker is a year with something new. Bars use the same scale all the way down.
Models are DVLA’s, every body and version together (a convertible counts with its hatch). The road starts in the make’s first year with at least 100 new cars. A model counts as on sale in a year with at least 100 new cars, or a fifth of its best year if that’s fewer (so a supercar selling 80 a year still counts); it’s new, or bows out, in its first or last year on sale. At most eight models are shown a year; the rest are under Other.
Favourite colours are of each year’s cars still being tested in the latest year: the cars that survived, not all those sold.

Where they live
By the postcode area of the test centre. DVSA’s open data doesn’t name test centres, so this is as close as it gets to a car’s home.
Cars per 1,000 MOT tests
Each circle is a postcode area, sized by the number tested; darker means they’re a bigger share of cars there.
